His nonfiction works include Built for Adventure: The Classic Automobiles of Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt, plus The Sea Hunters and The Sea Hunters II. They describe the true adventures of the real NUMA, which, led by Cussler, searches for lost ships of historic significance. With his crew of volunteers, Cussler has discovered more than 60 ships, including the long lost Confederate ship Hunley. He lives in Arizona.Jack Du Brul became a #1 New York Times–bestselling author by cowriting Clive Cussler’s fan-favorite Oregon series, which has become a fan favorite. Du Brul lives in Vermont with his wife. When Isaac Bell attempts to decipher the forbidding deaths of nine men, he encounters a secret so powerful it could dictate the fate of the world in this riveting thriller by the #1 New York Times-bestselling author.A century apart, NUMA Director Dirk Pitt and detective Isaac Bell team up to unlock the truth about the most famous maritime disaster of all time.In the present day, Pitt makes a daring rescue from inside an antiquated submersible in the waters off New York City. His dangerous quest to answer the riddle leads to a larger puzzle centered on byzanium, a rare element with extraordinary powers and of virtually incalculable value. As he discovers that there are people who will do anything to control the substance, Isaac Bell will find out just how far he'll go to stop them.

Dissapointing Isaac Bell adventure I will preface my review by stating that I really like Jack Du Brul. I have read all of his Philip Mercer books and love them. I also liked his participation in the Oregon Files books. I think they are great. I have read every Isaac Bell book and can't get enough of the old time adventures and the depth that the authors have gone into to bring that era to life. This book was Jack's 1st coordination with Cussler on Isaac Bell, and I hope his last. Significantly missing was the usual cast of characters from the Van Dorn Detective agency, Bell's wife Marion, and the nuances of the language from the era. Not once did I hear ," on the jump", one of Bell's favorite phrases. It seemed like the author really did not know Isaac Bell at all, which of course he didn't. This was an easy book to put down and resume reading at a later time, completely in contrast to the usual Isaac Bell novels. All the other reviews detail the plot of the story very thoroughly, thus I will not bother to repeat. Isaac Bell is a great character and the period in which the novels take place is always interesting, but not with Jack Du Brul as the co-author. He needs to stick with his Philip Mercer books or Cussler's Oregon file where he is outstanding.Wow, what a story Great story and I'm really glad I read book out of the Dirk Pitt series, Raising the Titanic first. Great plot and He kept it going well even after what I knew after reading Raising the TitanicNot a Titanic book... If you are thinking of buying this book because you love stories about the Titanic then stay away. Roughly 10-15 pages of this (out of a total of 400) even mention the Titanic. Don't get me wrong; the story is mildly entertaining. However, I expect a book that has a prominent picture of the Titanic on its cover and the word 'Titanic' in its title to devote a major portion of its narrative to the Titanic or events surrounding it. Shame on the authors and publisher for creating what I consider to be the book version of "clickbait".

Title: The Code of Capital Pdf How the Law Creates Wealth and Inequality

Capital is the defining feature of modern economies, yet most people have no idea where it actually comes from. What is it, exactly, that transforms mere wealth into an asset that automatically creates more wealth? The Code of Capital explains how capital is created behind closed doors in the offices of private attorneys, and why this little-known fact is one of the biggest reasons for the widening wealth gap between the holders of capital and everybody else.  In this revealing book, Katharina Pistor argues that the law selectively "codes" certain assets, endowing them with the capacity to protect and produce private wealth. With the right legal coding, any object, claim, or idea can be turned into capital - and lawyers are the keepers of the code. Pistor describes how they pick and choose among different legal systems and legal devices for the ones that best serve their clients' needs, and how techniques that were first perfected centuries ago to code landholdings as capital are being used today to code stocks, bonds, ideas, and even expectations - assets that exist only in law.  A powerful new way of thinking about one of the most pernicious problems of our time, The Code of Capital explores the different ways that debt, complex financial products, and other assets are coded to give financial advantage to their holders.

The law of capital: the mother of all subsidies This well-written and deeply researched book should be essential reading for anyone with a serious interest in the intersection of law and economics and in understanding, in the words of the subtitle, how the law creates wealth and inequality. The term “law and economics” has come to mean to economists and conservative-leaning jurists the subordination of law to economics and its “natural” laws of supply and demand. Providing a robust antidote to this type of economics-centric thinking, this book by a legal academic makes clear that the “code of capital” owes its power to law that is backed and enforced by the state. The ability to create, preserve and pass on wealth is dependent on how the law governs contracts, property, trusts and corporations, and how it treats debtors and creditors (including in bankruptcy). Not surprisingly, even in democratic societies, these laws systematically privilege capital over labor, shareholders over other stakeholders, and creditors over debtors. While the focus is on the current globalized world of securitized debt, transnational investments, intellectual property, and even cryptocurrency, much of the analysis usefully entails looking back at how these areas of law evolved from feudal times through the Industrial Revolution and to the present, in which legal norms continue to privilege the rich and powerful. Moreover, while the role of legislators and courts is not neglected, the analysis emphasizes how for the most part the applicable law developed at the hands of skilled private lawyers serving their merchant/corporate clients one transaction or investment at a time, and how increasingly disputes are increasingly resolved through private settlements and arbitration walled off from public scrutiny. Thus, a key take-away is: “Law that is backed by the threat of coercive enforcement increases the likelihood that the commitments that private parties made to one another and the privileges they obtained will be recognized and enforced without regard to pre-existing social ties or competing norms and that these legal claims will even be respected by strangers. As long as the threat of coercive law enforcement is sufficiently credible, voluntary compliance can be achieved without mobilizing it in every case.” The threat of coercive law enforcement and incentives to obey the rules diminish, however, in a globalized commercial world: “The legal protections capital enjoys are arguably the mother of all subsidies. Rising inequality is the logical conclusion of a legal order that systematically privileges some holders’ assets, but not others. This is the case especially in a globalized world, in which intervention on the side of the less advantaged can be so easily punished by capital taking to the exit.”Last year’s We the Corporations by Adam Winkler provided a masterful legal history on how corporations won important constitutional battles for their own “civil rights” in the Supreme Court over the past 200 years. This book is equally ambitious in addressing how the rest of our common law regime has been shaped by corporate lawyers to advance the interests of corporations and their owners. Together, they go a long way in explaining their dominance in law, society and, inevitably, politics.Capitalism's cream rises, through somewhat opaque structures This is a book of just a sort and focus I've long been waiting for. It gets right to the crux of the nuts and bolts of wealth and power, the maps and charters, if you will, lifting these layers to a deep level which digs beyond the PR myths and justifications offered by the rich and powerful, for their station in life. The roots of power and control can be obscured by various opaque concepts and documents, and it is all laid bare here, concept by concept, piece by piece. I appreciate her digging through some history and delivering some takes I hadn't seen or imagined yet. We must travel back some to see what congealed into our present system. The author explores the different paths and ways of life that were shunted aside, along the way, whose ideas might yet be useful for us, in the search for a future political economy, land use, and planetary footprint that is survivable and good. Some other books here which touch on similar themes, but from different angles, include Property by Raymond Frey (going back into great thinkers on property's underlying concepts), and White Shoe, by Jon Oller (on the elite lawyer-history side). I found both of those excellent in their own ways, and reviewed them here.Once this book gets past the basics, about an hour or so in, so;me things show up I appreciate, I have not seen much of elsewhere (in audio),for example:- A neat map of the financial and corporate structure of latter-day Lehman Brothers, and a sketch of some of its post-bankruptcy experiences (especially rare in the literature). This is a shell game and sleight-of-hand at its best!- A deeper dive into the parts and operators of a pretty typical collateralized mortgage structure, pre-2008, and its place in mortgage finance (going beyond the simplicities that popular books have stuck with), and- A journey back into the origins of financial instruments, since about the 1450s, and the evolution of innovations in that area. From that, the listener can follow the bread crumbs right to where we are. These are relatively unusual things to find at a good price in any form. Each, for me, is worth the price of admission here. A few areas get mildly flat and repetitive, but I overall I like this one a lot.Another book that may be of interest is a favorite (just read my second time through), The End of Alchemy by Mervyn King. This overlaps with this book, by showing the conjuring act certain powerful private entities are allowed to do, to generate and aim streams of credit and wealth (so, power), and how these entities also enjoy public backstops if things go wrong.Interesting Perspective Great book offering unique insights into the creation of capital and wealth by systems of law. I highly recommend it.

The Librarian of Auschwitz Pdf

Title: The Librarian of Auschwitz Pdf
Author: Antonio Iturbe
Published Date: 2017-10-10
Page: 432

Gr 8 Up—Based on the true story of Holocaust survivor Dita Kraus, this novel features a protagonist who exemplifies courage in the face of death. Fourteen-year-old Dita is imprisoned at Auschwitz along with her mother and father in the "family camp." Her work assignment is to assist the Jewish leader in charge of Block 31, a section created to entertain the children so that their family can work. This block has many secrets, but the most important is that eight books were smuggled in by Jewish prisoners. Dita has been entrusted with their care, making her "the Librarian of Auschwitz." As time passes on, she becomes aware that Dr. Mengele has taken an interest in her, and while she is terrified that "Doctor Death" is paying attention to her, she finds the courage to protect her books, family, and friends at all costs. Throughout, well-known Nazi leaders and lesser-known Jewish heroes play pivotal roles, making the connection with the historical elements of the horrors of Auschwitz, and later Bergen-Belsen more credible and relatable. Despite being a fictional retelling of a true story, this novel is one that could easily be recommended or taught alongside Elie Wiesel's Night and The Diary of Anne Frank and a text that, once read, will never be forgotten. VERDICT A hauntingly authentic Holocaust retelling; a must for YA collections.—Stephanie Wilkes, Good Hope Middle School, West Monroe, LA "an unforgettable, heartbreaking novel." ―Publishers Weekly, starred review, on The Librarian of Auschwitz"Like Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, it’s a sophisticated novel with mature themes, delivering an emotionally searing reading experience. An important novel that will stand with other powerful testaments from the Holocaust era." ―Booklist, starred review, on The Librarian of Auschwitz"This novel is one that could easily be recommended or taught alongside Elie Wiesel’s Night and The Diary of Anne Frank and a text that, once read, will never be forgotten. VERDICT A hauntingly authentic Holocaust retelling; a must for YA collections." ―School Library Journal, starred review, on The Librarian of Auschwitz"Though no punches are pulled about the unimaginable atrocity of the death camps, a life-affirming history." ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review, on The Librarian of Auschwitz"The Librarian of Auschwitz is a heartbreaking and ultimately inspiring work of art." ―Shelf Awareness, starred review, on The Librarian of Auschwitz"Iturbe’s remarkable account uses an immediate present tense to immerse readers in Dita’s story as she goes about what constitutes daily life in Auschwitz, all the while risking everything to distribute and hide the library’s books." ―The Horn Book, starred review, on The Librarian of Auschwitz

Based on the experience of real-life Auschwitz prisoner Dita Kraus, this is the incredible story of a girl who risked her life to keep the magic of books alive during the Holocaust.

Fourteen-year-old Dita is one of the many imprisoned by the Nazis at Auschwitz. Taken, along with her mother and father, from the Terezín ghetto in Prague, Dita is adjusting to the constant terror that is life in the camp. When Jewish leader Freddy Hirsch asks Dita to take charge of the eight precious volumes the prisoners have managed to sneak past the guards, she agrees. And so Dita becomes the librarian of Auschwitz.

Out of one of the darkest chapters of human history comes this extraordinary story of courage and hope.

Views From Within The Family Camp As a veteran reader of Holocaust literature, I found this book to be informative. That is, it's the first account that I've ever read from inside the "family camp" at Auschwitz. The author's description of the teenager charged with the security of the camp's 8 books is necessarily fictionalized to a great extent; many details and some dialogue could not have been contemporaneous facts. However, this is a small issue. Whereas I thought I had a fairly comprehensive understanding of this concentration camp (and others), I wasn't aware of the specific conditions that prevailed there, that the inmates established a school so that children could benefit from some sense of normalcy, and that parents and children actually lived together (within reach, or in nearby barracks) for extended periods. They certainly experienced awful conditions, which adds poignancy to the "librarian's" nightmarish personal history. This book captured a special place in my heart I have read many Holocaust books in my life, not really to learn anything new about WWII, but to learn new stories about those who lived through this event, and honor those who had the misfortune to be alive, living in those unbearable conditions.I hold books like the Nightingale, all the books by Roberta Kagan, Saving Sophie, Finding Rebecca, Rebecca’ s Key, The Invisible Bridge, and of course The Diary of Anne Frank, as well as The Librarian, close to my heart, just as Dita held her books close to her during her time in Concentration Camps. The author met Dita many years after the war, and wrote her story for us all to know, admire, and be amazed by her spirit, and bravery. He even goes on to tell what happened to each of the Natzi leaders in the epilogue. There is even a surprise connection with Anne Frank.Through this horror, many children are taught to read, learn about history, geography, the wonder of books by loving teachers, who try to keep things as normal as possible for the children. If I could, I would put this book, along with Anne Frank’s Diary, Into every child’s hands, as well as every adult’s. It really is a gift.Heartbreaking Take of Life at Auschwitz It took me a few chapters to get into this book but once I did, Wow! The story revolves around Dita, a young Jew, who is placed in the family blockof Auschwitz and takes on the position as librarian. Books are banned and the position is extremely risky. While reading The Librarian, the characters began to feel like family and I could literally feel their pain, hunger, fear and sorrow. The details provided about the conditions of Auschwitz is beyond imaginable. And to think that Dita has it much easier than the inmates in Auschwitz I. The number of innocent lives taken by the Nazi party is horrific, as well as the causes of the deaths. I found the takes of the doctor's experiments to be the absolute worse. I can not help but wonder what type of monster it takes to do the things he did especially to childre . This book leaves you sad and feeling empty but at the same time grateful that there has been nothing similar since. Great book. Highly recommend.

Author: John Brooks
Published Date: 2014

“The prose is superb. Reading Brooks is a supreme pleasure. His writing turns potentially eye-glazing topics (e.g., price-fixing scandals in the industrial electronics market) into rollicking narratives. He’s also funny. . . . He tells entertaining stories replete with richly drawn characters, setting them during heightened moments within the world of commerce.” —Slate

Business Adventures remains the best business book I’ve ever read.” —Bill Gates, The Wall Street Journal

What do the $350 million Ford Motor Company disaster known as the Edsel, the fast and incredible rise of Xerox, and the unbelievable scandals at General Electric and Texas Gulf Sulphur have in common? Each is an example of how an iconic company was defined by a particular moment of fame or notoriety; these notable and fascinating accounts are as relevant today to understanding the intricacies of corporate life as they were when the events happened.

Stories about Wall Street are infused with drama and adventure and reveal the machinations and volatile nature of the world of finance. Longtime New Yorker contributor John Brooks’s insightful reportage is so full of personality and critical detail that whether he is looking at the astounding market crash of 1962, the collapse of a well-known brokerage firm, or the bold attempt by American bankers to save the British pound, one gets the sense that history repeats itself.

Five additional stories on equally fascinating subjects round out this wonderful collection that will both entertain and inform readers . . . Business Adventures is truly financial journalism at its liveliest and best.

That can also be a good thing as it challenges and develops your thinking process Not your typical business book as you must dig for the lesson from each story. That can also be a good thing as it challenges and develops your thinking process. The author is a very talented writer and while the stories are a bit dated, most pull you into a specific sphere of the business world very quickly. It is up to you to learn from that point on what the best lesson is from each as you get an interesting insider look into a myriad of business and government vignettes. An interesting read A great collections of some amazing business events from the 1960's. Truly timeless in their appropriateness in a business context. I highly recommended this book to anyone interested in business and ethics to a large degree.Boring, Dated & Basic I’m really not sure why this book is still heralded. It’s extremely dated and frankly, not that insightful. If you’re younger than 70 and have been in business or are a student of business, you can skip this.

I might buy this one again I really like these color and frame spiral bound coloring books. I have 3 of the single books and several of the 3 in 1. The paper is high quality printed on one side, and pages are perforated. This one is full of floral patterns. The spiral binding makes it much easier to access the full page to color. So far I've used pens and colored pencils, and the paper holds up well with no bleed through.paper quality is different Used to be a quality book. The paper quality has changed. It's super cheap super absorbent. No longer good for water colour or gel pens. Okay for pencil. Will no longer buy. Can't wait to try this out! I just received this, and was inspired to write a good review for a couple of reasons. The spiral bound book is a really nice format. It will be very easy to remove pages without tearing the edges. The inside of the back and front covers offer some really inspiring color palette examples. The best feature is the consistency of detail on pages. Many coloring books have a wide variety, and some of the pages are just too much black ink and small spaces for me. This book is pretty consistent and I can see myself using every page. The paper seems to be high quality. I'm eager to try this out tonight.
